Today there are innumerable horse Breeds in each country, also some that are less well known.

Originally the objective was to a breed a "large horse", which could be used for all the hard work. After a while it was realised that a smaller, lighter horse was also needed, for example for riding.

To cope with the increasing kinds of riding and needs in sport appropriate breeds had to be bred. Unfortunately many of the old "Heavy Horse" breeds started to disappear, to prevent them becoming extinct fans of these Breeds kept them alive.

For example the north Americans are rightfully proud of their "national breeds", although in former times there were no horses! It was the Spanish settlers that made the breeding possible to beginn with. Today North America has the best race horses and trotters in the world.

The GU states have about forty recognized Breeds.

The most well-known horses from the USA are Morgan, Quarterhorse and naturally the Appaloosa.
